Person of the Holy Spirit

As “desperately wicked” people, we cannot reform our hearts through our effort – the only solution is for God to make our hearts new

Genesis 2:7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul.”

  • Formed [H 3335]: 3rd person masculine to fashion – the action was performed by a third person (God the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost). Divine activity – of the original creation.
  • Man [H 120]: Adam, the first man.  Mankind follows the original.
  • Dust [H 6083]: Dry, loose earth. Genesis 13:16 “And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.”
  • Breathed [H 5301 (12x)]: Qal: Perfect 3rd person feminine singular.  To blow, be blown, or breathe.
  • Into his nostrils [H 639]: as the organ of breathing.
  • Breath [H 5397 (24x)]: Breath of man as breathed in by God, it is God’s breath in man.
  • Life [H 2416]: life – animals and man [Also, verse, became a living]
  • Soul [H 5315]: inner being of man, person, living being. Genesis 12:5, 13, Genesis 17:14.

The Womb and Spirit/Breath

New Revised Standard Version Anglicized (NRSVA)

  • Ecclesiastes 11:5 Just as you do not know how the breath comes to the bones in the mother’s womb, so you do not know the work of God, who makes everything.”

King James Version

  • Ecclesiastes 11:5 As thou knows not what the way [H 1870: path] of the spirit is [H 7307] nor how the bones [H 6106: bone, the substance of self.] do grow in the womb of her that is with child: even so, thou knows not the works of God who makes all.”

Bones

Genesis 2:21-2321 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh [H 1320: body] instead thereof 22 and the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. 23 And Adam said, This is now bone [H 6106: substance] of my bones [H 6106: substance], and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman because she was taken out of Man.

  • Rib [H 6707 (2x)]: a rib as curved – literally of the body.

Natural Growth – Repair of the Rib

https://news.usc.edu/68485/rib-regeneration-studied-in-mammals/

Unlike salamanders, mammals can’t regenerate lost limbs, but they can repair large sections of their ribs.

A study in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research took a look at rib regeneration in both humans and mice.  Several researchers monitored the healing of a human rib that had been partially removed by a surgeon.  The missing cartilage was partially repaired after six months.

Bones Breathed Upon

Ezekiel 37:9 Then said he unto me, prophesy unto the wind [H 7307], prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind [H 7307], Thus saith the Lord GOD; Come from the four winds [H 7307], O breath [H 7307], and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.”

  • Wind [H 7307]: sign and symbol of life.  Breath of life.
  • Gen 7:15 “And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh, wherein is the breath [H 7307] of life.”
  • Breathe [H 5301]: Same as above: Imperative feminine singular – blow.

Ezekiel 37:1-14 (Verses 7-10 shown) [ Bones 9 Times] “7 So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone. 8 And when I beheld, lo, the sinews and the flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them above: but there was no breath in them. 9 Then said he unto me, Prophesy unto the wind [H 7303], prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind, Thus saith the Lord God; Come from the four winds, O breath [H 7307], and breathe [H 5301] upon these slain, that they may live. 10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great army.

Bones and the Breath of God

2 Kings 13:21 And it came to pass, as they were burying a man, that, behold, they spied a band of men; and they cast the man into the sepulcher of Elisha: and when the man was let down, and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet.”

Yeshua – the Lamb

  • Psalm 34:20 He kept all his bones: not one of them is broken.”
  • John 19:33,36 33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs. 36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.”

Spirit, Soul, and Body

1 Thessalonians 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

  • spirit [G 4151]: pneuma.
  • Soul [G 5590]: psyche.  The seat of feelings, As an essence that does not dissolve by death – is distinguished from other parts of the body.
  • Body [G 4983]: the body of an animal or human.

Death of the Physical Body

Ecclesiastes 12:1,61 Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them. 6 Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel is broken at the cistern.”

Ecclesiastes 12:7Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit [H 7307] shall return unto God [H 430: Elohim] who gave it.”

  • As we just covered: Same as wind [H 7307]: sign and symbol of life. Breath of life

Jesus – The Soul

Isaiah 53:10-12 10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. 11 He shall see of the travail of his soul and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors, and he bore the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors.”

  • Poured Out [H 6168]: To pour out, spreading oneself (cross-reference), bare and exposed.
  • Soul [H 5315]: the inner being of man [mind, will, and emotions – Tabernacle of Moses]

“He Poured Out His Soul Unto Death”

It pleased the Father that in him [Christ] should all fullness dwells and, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth or things in heaven.” Colossians 1:19-20

Blood in the Scriptures is a symbol of life, particularly life poured out as an atonement for sin.

  • Leviticus 17:11The life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that makes an atonement for the soul

The Apostle Paul (and John) gave an analogy to atonement as expressed by the Greek [2434] word propitiation which means to appease or make satisfaction.

  • Romans 3:25Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God.”
  • I John 2:2 “He [Jesus] is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”

The Last Supper

Mark 14:23-24 23 And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it. 24 And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.”

Jesus – Commit and Commend His spirit

Psalm 31:1-7 1 In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness. 2 Bow down your ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for a house of defense to save me. 3 For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore, for thy name’s sake lead me, and guide me. 4 Pull me out of the net that they have laid privily for me: for thou art my strength. 5 Into your hand I commit my spirit [H7307]: thou hast redeemed me, O Lord God of truth. 6 I have hated them that regard lying vanities: but I trust in the Lord. 7 I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities.

  • Commit [H 6485]: Implicit – entrust or deposit.

Luke 23:46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend [G 3908] my spirit [G 4151: pneuma] and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.”

  • Ghost [G 1606 (3x)]: breathe out one’s life.

1 Kings 14:27 And king Rehoboam made in their stead brazen shields and committed them unto the hands of the chief of the guard, which kept the door of the king’s house.”

  • Commend [G 3908]: To place down (for oneself or oneself) with anyone to deposit, to entrust and commit to one’s charge.  A thing to be cared for.  To commend one, to another, for protection and safety.

Psalm 16:10 For you will not abandon my soul [H 5315] to Hades or let your Holy One see corruption. You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.”

Acts 2:27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul [G 5590] in hell [G 86: hades], neither will thou suffer your Holy One to see corruption.”

Veil was Rent in Two

Matthew 27:51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent.”

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of the soul [G 5590] and spirit [G 4151], and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

  • Dividing Asunder [G 3311 (2x)]: to cleave asunder and separate.  A partition of the two.
  • Joints [G 719 (1x)]: Where bones connect.  Interesting – from the same root (G716) word for a chariot or war chariots armed with scythes.
  • Marrow [G 3452 (1x)]: To close or shut.

Job 21:24His breasts are full of milk, and his bones are moistened with marrow.”

Bone marrow is a soft highly vascular-modified connective tissue that occupies or fills the cavities of most bones and holds cells that creates red and white blood cells and platelets that produce whole blood.  It is a spongy, soft tissue that resembles jelly or jam.  It comes in two forms or colors, red and yellow.

Red blood is the chief site of blood cell formation (production) and occurs in the normal adult in cancellous tissue, especially of certain flat bones.  The yellowish consists chiefly of fat cells and is found especially in the cavities of long bones.

Deuteronomy 12:23-2523 Only be sure that thou eat not the blood: for the blood is the life, and thou mayest not eat the life with the flesh. 24 Thou shalt not eat it; thou shalt pour it upon the earth as water. 25 Thou shalt not eat it; that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee, when thou shalt do that which is right in the sight of the Lord.”

Leviticus 17:13-1413 And whatsoever man there be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, which hunt and catch any beast or fowl that may be eaten he shall even pour out the blood thereof and cover it with dust. 14 For it is the life of all flesh; the blood of it is for the life thereof, therefore, I said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall eat the blood of no manner of flesh: for the life of all flesh is the blood thereof: whosoever eats it shall be cut off.”

Conclusion of Part 1

SPIRIT, SOUL, AND BODY

Quoting Paul:

1 Corinthians 13:12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.”

I Thessalonians 5:23 – The apostle Paul is writing to Christians, and he says, “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN SPIRIT AND SOUL

The Bible makes a distinction between the spirit and the soul.

  • Hebrews 4:12For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

WHERE DO OUR SPIRIT AND SOUL GO AFTER DEATH?

As we have extensively covered, when physical death occurs, the spirit and soul are separated from the physical body.  According to the Old Testament, the spirit of believers returns to the Lord at death.

  • Ecclesiastes 12:7Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.”

The physical body is buried in the ground (“the dust will return to the earth”), but the spirit of the believer “returns to God who gave it.”

Part 2 –

The Soul: Mind, Will, and Emotions

The Heart

Genesis 6:5And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”

  • Heart [H 3820]: inner man, mind, will.  Some call the conscience or seat of the Soul.
  • Evil [H 7451]: malignant, malignant boils, diseases, an unclean thing, unpleasing in the eyes of God.

Jeremiah 17:1, 9-10 1 The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron, and with the point of a diamond: it is graven upon the table of their heart [H 3820], and the horns of your altars. 9 The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked: who can know it? 10 I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.”

  • Pen of Iron [H 5842]: To sink or penetrate.  Iron stylus with diamond tip used to write on stone or metal.
  • Desperately wicked [H 605 (9x)]: Beyond cure, desperately sick, woefully sick beyond cure.  It is a concept that theologians call “total depravity.”

Jeremiah 20:12But, O Lord of hosts, that tries the righteous and sees the reins and the heart, let me see thy vengeance on them, for unto thee have I opened my cause.”

Matthew 15:18-1918 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart and they defile the man. 19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies…”

  • Defile [G2840]: to make (Levitically) unclean, render unhallowed, and profane.

Depravity of Mankind

Romans 1:29–32: 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed, and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant, and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. 32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.”

Romans 3:9-18 3 What shall we conclude then? Do we have any advantages? Not at all! For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin. 10 As it is written: ‘There is no one righteous, not even one; 11 there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. 12 All have turned away, they have together become worthless; no one does good, not even one.’ 13 ‘Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit.’ ‘The poison of vipers is on their lips.’ 14 ‘Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.’ 15 ‘Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 ruin and misery mark their ways 17 and the way of peace they do not know.’ 18 ‘There is no fear of God before their eyes.’”

Understandably, we know that not every person will commit all the sins listed by Paul.  Total depravity does not mean that every person is as bad as he/she can be, but every person of the lineage from Adam and Eve is consumed by the sin of sinful nature.  Although men/women try, there is no hope of “getting better” on our own.  We are “desperately wicked.”

Created Man/Woman  –

Old Testament:

Genesis 1:27 So God created [H 1254] man in his own image, in the image of God created [H 1254] him; male and female created [H 1254] them.”

Isaiah 43:1, 7 1 But now thus saith the Lord that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. 7 Even everyone that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.”

  • Created [1254]: Always with God as the subject (In the beginning God created).  Create, shape, or form as heaven and earth and an individual.  Of something new as of birth.
  • Formed [H 3335]: Of divine activity, as a potter forming Adam out of and from clay

New Testament:

Ephesians 2:10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”

Ephesians 4:24And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.”

Colossians 3:10And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him.”

  • Workmanship [G 4161 (2x)]: Of the works as God the creator.
  • Created [G 2936 (14x)]: Completely change and transform the moral or new creation of the soul for intimate fellowship with Christ.
  • New [G 2537]: Recently made, fresh, unused, unprecedented, and of a new kind.
  • Renewed [G 341 (2x)]: To be changed into a new kind of life as opposed to the former corrupt state.  Make new and grow in strength and vigor.
  • In the image [G 1504]: Moral likeness of renewed men to God.

The New Birth

The only hope for the sinful human heart is to be supernaturally changed or as Jesus told the esteemed scholar Nicodemus.

John 3:1-81 Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews; 2 this man came to Jesus at night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.” 3 Jesus responded and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone is born again [from above] he cannot see the kingdom of God.4 Nicodemus *said to Him, “How can a person be born when he is old? He cannot enter his mother’s womb a second time and be born, can he?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which has been born of the flesh is flesh, and that which has been born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born again [from above].’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it is coming from and where it is going; so is everyone who has been born of the Spirit.”

  • Be Born [G 1080]: God conferring upon men the nature and disposition of making man his sons, imparting to them spiritual life, i.e., by his holy power prompting and persuading souls to put faith in Christ and live a new life consecrated to himself.
  • Again [G 507]: Anew, over again, from the top or above.  Some commentators have the view of the physical birth with the amniotic sac – a thin but tough transparent pair of membranes that hold a developing embryo and later the fetus until shortly before birth.  Other theologians believe Paul is referring to the “baptism” for sin where a man/woman is a new creation in Christ.

Psalm 51:10Create [H 1254] in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”

Jeremiah 24:7I will give them a heart [H 3820] to know Me, for I am the Lord; and they will be My people, and I will be their God, for they will return to Me with their whole heart [H 3820] .”

Ezekiel 11:19 And I will give them one heart [H 3820] and put a new spirit [H 7303] within them. And I will take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh.”

Ezekiel 36:26Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit [H 7303] within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh [H 1320] and give you a heart of flesh.”

Romans 2:29But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God.”

The Solution: A New Heart

Jeremiah 31:33Where sin was once inscribed on the hearts of His people, God provides a new inscription: ‘For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord, I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.’”

Jesus came to inaugurate a New Covenant so that sins could be forgiven, and sinners could be born again (John 3:5).  As “desperately wicked” people, we cannot reform our hearts through our effort.  The only solution is for God to make our hearts new, washed clean from sin, and fundamentally reoriented toward pleasing Him.

Psalm 51:10Create [H 1254] in me a clean heart [H 3820], O God; and renew a right (firm and ready) spirit [H 7307] within me.”

Redeeming the Soul

David wrote in Psalm 19 about the wonder of God’s world, His creation.  But in verse seven David makes a turn.  The “general revelation” gives evidence of Almighty God, but “special revelation,” God’s Word, is necessary to do this one thing: “revive” the human soul.

  • Psalm 19:7The law [Word] of the Lord is perfect [H 8549: complete with integrity] converting [H 7725: refresh, to bring back the heart], the soul and the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.”

Indeed, we are to be born again, the soul undergoing a supernatural transition, making it “fit” for heaven.  Our souls are “lost” without redemption.

The Bible teaches that there is no other redemption available except that “way” that Almighty God has provided through His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ:

  • Acts 4:12Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is no other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”

The spirit and soul

Proverbs 18:14 “The spirit [H 7307] of a man will sustain (endure) his infirmity; but a wounded spirit [H 7307] who can bear?”

  • Infirmity [H 4245 (6x)]: sickness or disease in general.
  • Wounded [H 5218 (4x)]: figuratively smitten, stricken, or broken.

Proverbs 15:13 A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.”

Proverbs 17:22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit dries the bones.”

Psalm 51:17The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit [H 7307] a broken and a contrite heart [H 3820: soul], O God, thou wilt not despise.”

  • Broken [H 7665]: break literally as an earthen vessel. When the citizens tried to break down the door to Lot’s home (Genesis 19:9).  No bone should be broken in the sacrificial lamb (Exodus 9:25).
  • Contrite [H 1794 (5x)]: As the people gathered manna and crushed it to make cakes (Number 11:8).

Holy Spirit and Fire

Isaiah 32:15 Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest.”

Joel 2:27-31 27 And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel and that I am the Lord your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed. 28 And it shall come to pass afterward [H 310/7093: ‘ahar/qatsats – preposition, of time], that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: 29 And also upon the servants and the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. 30 And I will show wonders in the heavens and the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord come.”

Revelation 4:1 After [G 3326] this I looked, and behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me, which said, Come up hither, and I will show thee things which must be hereafter [G 3326].”

  • After [G 3326]: Meta. Septuagint.  In the order of time afterward.  Same as [H 310] Hebrew preposition

Luke 24:49And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.”

Acts 2:1-4 1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them.”

Acts 2:14-21 14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words. 15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. 16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; 17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: 18 And on my servants and my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: 19 And I will show wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke: 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and notable day of the Lord come: 21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Acts 19:1-6 1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, 2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. 3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism. 4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.”

Titus 3:5-6 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of by the Holy Ghost 6 which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior.”

  • Regeneration [G 3824 (2x)]: new birth, reproduction, recreation, or regeneration.  The production of a new life consecrated to God, a radical change in the soul for the better.  Restoration of life after death.
  • Renewing [G 342 (2)]: a renewal, renovation, complete change for the better effected by the Holy Spirit.

Part 3 –

The Ekklesia: Ambassadors of Christ in a Legislative Body

Old Testament of the Assembly

Assembly [H 6591]: Qahel – congregation (86x), assembly (17x), company (17x), and multitude (3x).

  • Numbers 20:6 And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they fell upon their faces: and the glory of the Lord appeared unto them.”
  • Deuteronomy 9:10 And the Lord delivered unto me two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words, which the Lord spoke with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly.”

Formation of the Ekklesia/Ecclesia

Matthew 16:18And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

  • Peter [G 4074]: Petros – a rock or stone.
  • Rock [G 4073]: A rock, cliff, or ledge.  A large stone.  The setting was Caesarea Philippi near the base of Mt. Hermon.  About 25 miles north of the Sea of Galilee, at 9,230 feet, it is almost three times the height of any other peak in the territory of ancient Israel.  Figuratively considered the “Gates of Hell.”

  • Gates [G 4439 (10x)]: The gates of Hades – likened to a prison i.e., keys to the access or entrance.
  • Hell [G 86 (11x)]: The grave, nether world, the realm of the dead.  The rich man and Lazarus.
  • Revelation 1:18I am he that lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and death.”
  • Prevail (against) [G 2729 (2x)]: To overpower or overcome to another’s detriment.  Superior in strength.
